10 SOUVENIR COLLECTION IDEAS
If you’re anything like me and you love to buy millions of souvenirs and nicknacks on your travels, this is definitely the post for you! I am an excessive souvenir shopper, I love to buy unnecessary items to ensure I remember my mountains of travels when I’m an old granny.
There is something really special to me about making a collection of things from my global adventures. I, along with many of other travellers, love to buy the same type of product in every different country that I visit. There are so many different things you could buy that aren’t the typical key ring and magnet (like my collection), so here are few of my favourite ideas…
Like I said, this one is my personal favourite. I have a collection of key rings from around the world that I display on a little tree. Key rings and magnets are a great option because they are cheap, easily accessible and really describe the country you’ve visited. They are the most touristy product you could possibly buy, but I think that’s why I love them.
Every country has books! Bookworms and home-wear lovers alike should definitely invest in this alternative. If you have bookshelves to fill or if you want a good conversation starter, why not have a section of your home dedicated to books or magazines from around the world?
Not only is it an amazing way to dress your home, but they are also an amazing read. Although they might not always be in your language, flicking through these books when your old will bring a world full of memories flooding back in, especially if they are packed full of photos!
Just like books, almost everywhere has music and films. This option might be a little harder to find in more disadvantaged countries, but would be a really precious find if you happen to get your hands on some.
Cultural films and music really warm my heart. Music is a huge part of peoples lives around the world, and there is nothing like seeing locals indulge in their culture like they do with music and film. Have you ever heard a song from your childhood that reminded you of a certain moment, time or place? Well, Imagine the memories that would come flooding back when you listen to cultural music in years to come! I’m certain this souvenir will not only be the most heartwarming, but also the one that will be the most remindful!
If you love your arm candy, why not make a global collection? Every country around the world has some sort of jewellery. I have a few rings and bracelets from Indonesia and India that I absolutely love, that make me think of my visit every time I wear them.
This is one of the only wearable souvenirs and is a really great way to make use of your money. From cultural hand beaded items in Africa to expensive gold in the Dubai souks… You could make an extremely impressive collection.
We are heading back in time to the olden camera days. A one-click photo from a Polaroid camera that is instantly printed for you. One photo in every country that you can display on a wall, board or album. Sounds great to me! All you have to do is buy the camera and the film and you’re set to go. They are small, compact, cheap and pack a punch full of meaning. Unlike all other options, this one you have created yourself.
I keep all my passes, all my tickets and basically everything that I get given whilst on my travels. Keep them in a box with all your other bits and store them away in your cupboard. This will help you remember all the little things that you get up to on your travels. Not just the country, but the attractions, places and things you get up to as well. You really won’t forget a thing!
Postcards are your picture without the camera. If you aren’t the best photographer or you simply love the idea of having a beautiful, picturesque photograph in the palm of your hand.. why not make the most of the touristy shops and buy yourself a postcard. A very easy souvenir to find, much like key rings and magnets!
This, of course, does not need to be a 2m piece of abstract art… It can be anything from a hand-drawn landscape artwork of Venice, a finger painting from children in Africa, a poster from London or a piece of pottery from Indonesia. Your possibilities are endless!
I love the idea of making a wall dedicated to displaying your travels. It doesn’t have to be tacky, you can spread your money how little or extensive as you like.. but if you have a home that is lacking personality, why not throw some travel into the mix.
We all love to smell good, so why not indulge in the different smells from around the world! I love my perfume and already have a very extensive collection. Not only is smell a strong memory trigger, but you could keep the beautiful bottles for the many years that follow!
Now, I can 100% guarantee you can get this souvenir anywhere in the world!
You could make a collection of all the different traditional outfits from around the globe; with Indian Saris, Japanese Kimonos, Aussie Cowboy hats and Scottish Kilts. Or maybe just one type of item like a hat, t-shirt or dress from each country.
Depending on the direction you choose, these souvenirs will be perfect for fancy dress parties or everyday wear. My partner uses this alternative and buys a soccer jersey from every country he visits. It really is an impressive way to remember your travels!
Travel is a gift, so you’ve got to make sure you remember it. You never know how long your memory will last, so at least when you’ve lost your marbles, your family can help you understand where in the world you have been from your impressive souvenir collection.
So find the things that you love, and start collecting them from around the world… You won’t regret it!
