Zazu in the flesh 🦁👑
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
— These beautiful birds are actually southern yellow-billed hornbills (sometimes called the banana bill / flying banana 🍌). Common across southern Africa; feeding on seeds, insects, frogs and scorpions. They quickly became a favorite of mine, most probably due to my obsession with the Lion King as a child 🥹 I really am obsessed ✨

The sweetest baby elephant you’ll surely ever see 🥹🐘
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
— I’ve always wondered what it is about elephants that humans are so captivated by… Perhaps it’s their unique features, their overwhelming size, their wisdom and grace, or maybe it’s their cheeky personalities. They’re the most incredible creatures, we really are SO lucky to walk this Earth with them 🤍

River and her little baby, Pebble 🦏
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
— River is an orphaned rhino who was rescued in 2014 after poachers took her mother’s life. She was attacked by lions and left with deep wounds on her legs, but after years of care and rehabilitation, she was nurtured back to health by @careforwild and released into their intensive protection zone… And now she has a sweet baby of her own 🥹

So very special 🤍

A king in the light 🦁
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
— From my first proper attempt at photographing wildlife at night… It’s HARD work 🫣 Trying to stabilize with a low shutter speed on a shaky vehicle is very challenging, but I’m so grateful to @charlysavely for all of her wonderful tips 🤍 This image was captured just as darkness fell, when we came across 2 male lions resting on the side of the road 🌚
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It was such a learning curve, but now my next challenge is to try and photograph some of our nocturnal Aussie critters ✨
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
PS. Please never use flash photography on wildlife, a soft spotlight (preferably red light if accessible but will be harder to photograph) shining above or below the animal is best 🥰

The most handsome guy 🦒
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
— Did you know that giraffe actually have the same number of vertebrae in their neck as us humans… We each have 7, but theirs are just 25cm long 🤯
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
These animals are so intertwined with their environment that many acacia tree seedlings (their primary diet) will not germinate unless they have passed through the giraffe’s digestive system! They’re vital in keeping the ecosystem in balance 🌳
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’m obsessed… Seeing them run (practically in slow motion) is one of my favorite things ✨

Staring into your soul 😅
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
— I feel like this portrait perfectly encapsulates the personality of ALL vervet monkeys. They’re cute, a little dorky, and extreeeeemely mischievous (often sneakily stealing food and farm crops) 🐒
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
… It’s definitely the little teefs for me though 🤓

A moment of connection — the elephant and the tree 🐘
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This was one of my favorite moments from my entire time in South Africa… This huge bull elephant pressed his head to the base of the tree and paused for a few moments before slowly beginning to scratch. The little bird on the branch above was catching the tiny bugs that flew from his skin; a harmonious relationship between 3 🤍
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It was one of the most picturesque and emotive encounters of the trip, one I’ll never forget ✨

I mean, look at that lil blue tongue… 🥹🦒
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
— I recently returned home from the most magical trip to South Africa with @charlysavely and @inspired.ventures 🇿🇦 This is the first of mannnnnnnnnny photos, so please excuse me while my Aussie feed is overtaken by the beauty of South Africa for a brief moment 🤍

Under the crescent moon 🌙🦘
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
— There’s something special about watching Australian wildlife at dusk and dawn... It truly is when nature comes alive 🤍

Caught mid blink 👁
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
— Fun fact: this image was actually what taught me about nictitating membranes ✨ I was photographing Alberta (the rescue emu at @emeraldwildlifeshelter) and she was blinking a lot, but it wasn’t until post production that I discovered the membrane sweeping across her eye. It happens far too quickly for our naked eye to spot 🤍

Some say that photography can be a distraction from the moment in front of you, but for me it’s quite the opposite… Photography has taught me so much about nature and the planet — more than anything else ever has 🥹
