THE WORLD’S ONLY UNDERWATER POST OFFICE
Sending postcards from foreign destinations is an incredibly important part of a lot of travellers routines… But imagine doing this from the depths of the ocean at the world’s only underwater post office!
Pretty crazy right? Well when you witness this experience in person, it’s even more surreal.
The underwater post office is situated just off the shores of Hideaway Island; not far from Port Vila, the capital of Vanuatu.
For those that may already be sceptical on this potential touristy scam… Fret not! This really is a legitimate post office in which you can send off your own postcard via a worker within the ocean.
Sure, it’s purely aimed at tourists; but not many people could say that they sent a letter from the sea, right? No matter whether you’re an adult with kids or an adult purely looking for some fun, this is a pretty amazing place!
Not to mention that Hideaway Island is a seriously beautiful location in itself; tiny in size but huge in character. This part of Vanuatu is labelled as a true marine sanctuary – and I’d have to totally agree.
On the day that I visited, the weather was very overcast, but the snorkelling was still completely out of this world. Thousands and thousands of fish swim in the coral surrounding Hideaway Island – and on a sunny day, I could only imagine that the experience would be 100 X better.
On arrival to this beautiful place, an entry fee is required which is also the point in which you can pay for your snorkel hire and postcard to send at the post office (I know… I thought it was insane too)!
For those that are interested purely in the post office, it’s only a few metres below the water’s surface and about 40 metres from the shore. It’s an amazing experience for young kids, simply as they can deliver a card to a tiny room that rests within the ocean… In an under water world!
As you can see, it’s a little hard to capture. But this tiny office labelled “Vanuatu Post”, is pretty special regardless of its not-so-crazy appearance. It’s important to remember that it’s in the ocean… It would be completely impossible to make this look anything like a traditional post office.
If you can bring a GoPro, I’d highly recommend it – this is a once in a lifetime experience that you want to remember forever!
For those that may not have much interest in this attraction but want to have a nice day out, there is a snack bar, hotel, volleyball net, and lounge chairs for you to spend your time whilst the others head out to explore.
As I said above, the snorkelling is easily one of the best I’ve ever experienced! At one point, I was swimming around with a ball of over 2000 fish; delving in and out of the huge swarm as they moved around in their pack.
I can guarantee that you’ll see some of the most amazing marine life imaginable around this place. The post office and Hideaway Island as a whole are 2 things you really don’t want to miss if you love observing sea life.
Being able to run in and out of the water, sipping on cocktails, sunbaking and experiencing incredible snorkelling all within a close proximity is pretty darn special!
If you do ever visit, the most important thing to remember is trying to preserve the reef.
Don’t stand on the coral and try really hard not to kick it. There are parts in which the water level gets very low – Sure you may see a lot of fish close up… But if you can’t swim across without breaking the coral, just don’t do it!
So to sum things up, if you happen to find yourself in Vanuatu… Go to Hideaway Island and send a postcard from the world’s only underwater post office. It sounds pretty crazy, and that’s because it is.
An underwater post office?! You’ll never experience this anywhere else; it would be a shame to waste it!
